Where It All Began

The story of ABLA – Amateur Basketball League Arad began with a simple idea: to create a place where people who love basketball could continue to compete, regardless of whether they were former professional players, amateur players or simply passionate about the sport.

The idea was initiated by Mihaltian Istvan, who began developing the concept in the summer of 2002. After numerous discussions with former basketball players, coaches and people involved in the sport, the project gradually took shape: an organized amateur basketball championship in Arad.

In the spring of 2003, together with his friend Attila Katona, Mihaltian began contacting amateur and former professional players, encouraging them to form teams and join the new competition.

2003

The First ABLA Season

In the summer of 2003, the idea became reality. The first ABLA season launched with seven teams: Denver, Bad Boys, Temerarii, Plumbers, Tigers, Unicum and Sharks.

At the beginning, almost everything was built through enthusiasm and voluntary work. Referees were often active or former players, while Mihaltian Istvan and Attila Katona handled much of the organization and officiating duties.

The games were played at Sala Decebal in Arad. The first final in ABLA history was played between Sharks and Temerarii, with Sharks becoming the first ABLA Champions.

Growing the League

Following the success of the first season, interest in ABLA increased rapidly. New teams appeared, more players wanted to participate, and Szabo Robert, Bartis Andras and Andrejkovits Zoltan became involved in the organization alongside Mihaltian Istvan and Attila Katona.

During this period, Mihaltian Istvan also created the first official ABLA Rule Book. By the second season, ABLA had already grown from 7 to 11 teams.

2007

A Record 23 Teams

In 2007, ABLA reached one of the most important milestones in its history: 23 participating teams. From seven teams at the beginning, the championship had developed into one of the largest organized amateur basketball competitions in the region.

ABLA Enters the Digital Era

Bartis Andras developed the first professional ABLA website, introducing detailed player statistics, standings, results, news, photographs and information about the competition.

For an amateur championship, maintaining detailed individual and team statistics was an important step forward and became one of ABLA's defining characteristics.

2013–2014 →

ABLA Becomes International

One of the biggest chapters in ABLA history began when teams from outside Romania entered the championship.

During the 2013–2014 period, a team from Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary became the first foreign team to participate in ABLA and competed in the league for two seasons.

Teams from Serbia followed. KK Čoka joined the league, and later a team from Novi Sad also became part of the competition. At the same time, ABLA continued expanding inside Romania, welcoming teams from cities such as Timișoara and Cluj-Napoca.

The original local idea from 2003 had therefore grown into a competition bringing together players and teams from Romania, Hungary and Serbia.

West Petrom Reloaded

In 2014, ABLA organized a special gala game at the Arad Sports Hall: West Petrom Reloaded.

The event brought former players from the West Petrom Arad era back onto the court to face an ABLA All Stars selection.

MORE THAN A CHAMPIONSHIP

A Community Built Through Basketball

Over the years, ABLA became more than a place where basketball games were played. Generations of players competed in the league. Some were former professional or junior players, while others discovered organized competitive basketball through ABLA.

Teams appeared, disappeared, returned or changed their names. Rivalries were created, friendships developed and hundreds of games became part of the history of the competition.

Statistics, individual awards, MVP rankings, All-Star events, playoffs and finals gradually became part of the ABLA identity.

But the principle behind the league remained the same: to give people who love basketball the opportunity to play organized, competitive basketball.

2003 → 2026

24 Seasons of Amateur Basketball

From seven teams in the summer of 2003 to an international competition involving teams from several Romanian cities as well as Hungary and Serbia, ABLA has travelled a long way.

Today, the league continues to evolve through modern statistics, digital scoresheets, live game information, online rankings, player profiles, historical records and live broadcasts, while preserving the spirit on which the competition was founded.

ABLA's history is not only the history of a basketball league. It is the history of the players who returned every season, the teams that competed for championships, the referees, officials, volunteers and everyone who contributed their time and passion to keep amateur basketball alive.

What began in Arad in 2003 as an idea created by Mihaltian Istvan has grown into a basketball community spanning cities and countries.
